The benefits of controlled natural ventilation

High air exchange + low energy losses

Fresh air is conducive to learning, reinforces a sense of well-being, prevents mould formation and minimises the risk of transmission of diseases via aerosol-sized particles.

D+H solutions for natural ventilation are based on the use of natural power sources and thermal lift, offering an environmentally-friendly, cost-efficient alternative to air-conditioning systems and other mechanical ventilation systems. Manage the supply of fresh air with intelligent solutions from D+H, either manually at the press of a button or automatically, and create a healthy living and working environment.

  • Low energy consumption and reduced energy costs by dispensing with active cooling and mechanical ventilation

  • Low maintenance costs due to low-maintenance technology

  • Shorter construction times due to fast, straightforward commissioning

  • Low investment costs due to lower systems engineering complexity

  • Supply of fresh air creates a healthy indoor climate and aids concentration

The three types of natural ventilation

Unilateral ventilation

Air circulates when window drives open the windows on one side of the room to admit fresh air. Because the amount of air exchange is limited, it only works in small rooms with just a few people.

Cross ventilation

Ventilation is provided via windows on two or more sides of the building based on the differences in wind pressure on the façades. This allows fresh air to quickly reach large, deep rooms.

Hybrid ventilation

Ventilation is provided by motorised windows combined with exhaust fans. This provides fresh air even in rooms with particularly complex climatic conditions.

Few components, maximum effect

Both simple and more complex ventilation solutions can be implemented with few components.

For conventional room sizes and a relatively small number of people in the room, ample ventilation with a simple D+H ventilation solution leads to a sufficient, effective air exchange. The frequency and duration of ventilation can be specifically defined based on the time of year and weather. Of course, the ventilation can also be time-controlled, for example in the form of a ventilation purge before work begins.

To enable the windows to be opened automatically, the D+H Portfolio includes ultra-quiet chain drives for the façade, and rack and pinion drives for the roof area. And for all those who feel uncomfortable when there are no windows that can be opened by hand, buttons, remote controls and touch panels are available that offer the individual convenience of controlling the window drives. An effective ventilation solution can be achieved even with just a few of the following components.

Two controllers, many possible uses

Depending on the complexity of your ventilation solution, the D+H controllers can be configured to meet the project requirements. The GVL Series is the ideal choice for simple ventilation solutions. If on the other hand the solution is more complex, the CPS-M Series can also reliably control smoke extraction. This means you no longer need another system to extract smoke from the building.

The compact GVL 8408-M ventilation controller allows for modular expansion.

Our strongest ventilation control panel in compact form. Optional additional modules for the powerful GVL 8408-M enable the control of convenient ventilation functions. The control panel can control up to 6 different groups of window drives individually.

Compact SHEV control panel

The digital CPS-M is a controller for ventilation and smoke extraction that allows for modular expansion.

The new analogue/digital module turns the digital CPS-M controller into the ideal control panel for automated ventilation of buildings. Thanks to this upgrade, both digital and analogue peripheral devices such as temperature and CO2 sensors, ventilation buttons and signal emitters can now be connected to the CPS-M and their signals can be evaluated. The practical ADM module has a total of 12 inputs and outputs for reliably controlling complex, automated ventilation scenarios with the CPS-M.

The user-friendly D+H solution for effective ventilation in classrooms and offices

A D+H model solution for time-controlled, automated ventilation of a classroom provides fresh air at the MaxS school (Max-Schmeling-Stadtteilschule) in the Marienthal district of Hamburg. The MaxS offers all school-leaving certificates up to the university entrance qualification (Abitur) and is characterised by the social, cultural and ethnic diversity of its students. In this open environment it was easy to win support with a model application of the D+H ventilation solution for classrooms and offices.

The model classroom can be ventilated manually or automatically based on defined time intervals or after a predefined CO2 limit value is exceeded.

The ventilation system is controlled by an intuitive user interface with password protection and user administration. The five extremely quiet chain drives can automatically and seamlessly open and close all windows as well as keep them in an open position. D+H window drives are burglary-resistant and, equipped with closing edge protection, they meet all the necessary safety requirements.

Two sensors mounted on the ceiling additionally ensure the safety of everyone who is present in the room. Firstly, a CO2 sensor automatically opens classroom windows as soon as the proportion of CO2 in the air exceeds a default limit value. Secondly, the presence detector prevents potential danger if a person is within the swivel range of a closing window.

Solution application at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School

Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School (PEGS) is a private school in Melbourne, Australia, offering education up to the secondary level. New school buildings are currently being erected on the school grounds in Keilor East whose appearance is characterised by  a distinctive visual language. This includes a long multi-purpose hall with many arched elements in the façade and inside the building.

D+H's Australian partner EBSA implemented a solution consisting of five flat continuous rooflights more than forty metres long. The idea is that each window element in these rooflights can be opened and closed individually.

The EBSA solution also envisages using D+H proprietary ACB bus technology to connect all components of the system. Today, 89 window drives and five controllers are connected via ACB.

A Modbus touchscreen programmed specifically for this application is used for easy operation of the roof windows. It incorporates all the important information and control functions for the building manager: Daily natural ventilation, cooling at night, automatic closing during strong winds or a power cut, and automatic opening in case of fire.
